Understanding where each Full Moon and New Moon lands in your chart throughout the year is essential as it's these lunations which act like cosmic spotlights. They highlight the areas of life that are primed for release, gratitude, growth, or renewal. Knowing which house each lunation will activate helps you anticipate the emotional tone of the month, where your energy will be most productive, and where effort may yield little result if stubbornly pursuing an aim. In many ways, it sets the theme and rhythm for your near future.

If you’re familiar enough with your chart to track what houses are being activated at any given time by transiting planets, your astrology practice is already robust. But let's say you're not that clued into each planets transits or which zodiac rules each of your houses.  The more accessible way to approach this type of astrology study then is to focus on two things. In what sign will the moon be residing during the Full or New Moon event, and where is it relative to your ascendant.

The ascendant acts like an anchor for the rest of the zodiac and helps you interpret the orientation of your wheel accordingly. While I am not a fan of Whole Sign astrology when it comes to interpreting a chart at large– as I find it limiting to nuance, using it for this proves useful as its simplicity and ease of tracking gives you a rough ballpark to work from.

For instance, a Gemini Rising will have a Sagittarius Descendant/Seventh House, a Virgo Fourth, and a Pisces Tenth. Using that same understanding of axis, then if a native has a Leo Ascendent, they will hold an Aquarius Seventh House, Scorpio Fourth, and Taurus Tenth. So on, and so on.

(I will stress this is only a ballpark estimation because if your ascendant sits at a late degree of a sign, it'll mean your First House will actually be held by the next sign, and this will pragmatically shift the wheel when it comes to attitudes around archetypes.) Regardless, when a Full Moon or New Moon transits your First House, you’ll usually notice it— whether it conjuncts your ascendant or not, as the pull it has over you will be intense.

Because it all comes down to the exact degrees of things, it's worth mentioning you will have transits through your First House annually but won't necessarily have conjunctions to your Ascendant every year; in those which you do, expect a profound need to shake things up.

You can pull up charting programs from any number of online tools available, (I've mentioned before and will list it here, my personal favorite is https://www.astro-seek.com) and in these programs you’ll see that when Full Moons or New Moons align with any of your natal planets or axis points it marks powerful lunations for you. Some years bring more of these exact overlaps than others. In practice, the Moon usually interacts with your inner planets quite often. This happens mainly because the inner planets tend to be clustered in areas of your chart that the Moon regularly passes through. But even without a perfect conjunction, the themes of the house being activated will be emphasized every time one of these lunations pass through. If we again use the First House for an example, a New Moon transiting your First highlights your identity, your self‑presentation, and the way you move through the world. During this time, you may feel inspired to shift how others perceive you or initiate a fresh chapter in your personal expression. A Full Moon transiting your First, on the other hand, can stir up intense emotions around your appearance, your confidence, or the way you’re showing up in your relationships and community.

During a New Moon, you might feel inspired to reveal a refreshed version of yourself—maybe by debuting a new haircut, experimenting with a different clothing style, or trying a new approach to your makeup if that’s part of your routine. New Moon energy in this house often brings the urge to reinvent, to shift how others see you, and to step into a new expression of your identity.

A Full Moon moving through it carries a different purpose. This is a time to release insecurities about your appearance and redirect your attention toward what you genuinely appreciate about yourself, rather than fixating on perceived flaws. There’s more of a balancing act needed under full illuminations, specifically because a Full Moon is created by an opposition. While the Moon illuminates your First House, the Sun is simultaneously lighting up your Seventh House—your significant relationships. This can highlight moments where your personal need to express yourself may feel at odds with the needs of the people closest to you.  This pattern continues as you move around the zodiac wheel. Each lunation activating a different house and its themes, and the Full Moon cycles also presenting a tug-of-war aspect to things.

One New Moon worth paying special attention to is the one that transits your Eleventh House. With the house governing friendships, community, and—most importantly—your long‑term wishes, this makes the New Moon here a powerful moment for intention‑setting. For example, Gemini Risings experience their “Super-Wishing Moon” during the New Moon in Aries, while a Libra Risings will find that energy during a New Moon in Leo. Simply take your rising sign and back up the wheel two zodiacs.

If you were to choose only one moon each year for ritual to support what it is you're seeking to manifest in the coming year, I would argue that the New Moon transiting your Eleventh is the one to prioritize! It's well suited to align with your hopes/dreams and it is understood that as the Sun moves through this house, as it does during New Moons, it supercharges matters. Therefore the combo of Sun and Moon energy will likely do so to any intent cast. Just as well, when the Full Moon transits this house you should give yourself a little bit of latitude as it will likely highlight where dreams have been left unfulfilled–that need letting go of.

So to reiterate, when a New Moon transits one of your houses, it is both the moon and the solar energy that is present within the archetype of life represented by the house, regardless if it interacts specifically with any of your natal planetary. When a Full Moon transits through one of your houses it is the Moon alone present that then plays off the Sun, who will be transiting the house opposite it. Engaging with the Moon's magic in this manner, with this understanding—especially when we are aware of how profoundly these luminaries affect our bodies and emotions—assists in clearing internal obstacles and letting go of past elements that have emotionally hindered us.

At the time of publishing, the next Full Moon will arrive on March 3rd in Virgo; also a lunar eclipse. This energy tends to feel especially supportive for earth and water signs, while fire and air signs may experience it as more challenging or restless. Virgo Full Moons often stir up anxious, perfection‑oriented energy, bringing themes of releasing the need to be flawless or recognizing the pitfalls of striving for perfection.

This lunation also invites humility—an acknowledgment of the ways life can level us—and asks whether we’ve been underestimating ourselves or, at times, overestimating what we can realistically take on. Anticipate this moon's journey through your chart to bring insights into how worry and self-criticism have obstructed your forward momentum, influenced by the theme of the house it visits.

Virgo being a sign devoted to service and improvement, it often worries itself about meeting certain standards, often lofty. Regularly, unattainable. Almost as if it sets itself up for failure. But we don’t need to push ourselves to the point of burnout. The Virgo Full Moon serves as a yearly reminder to discern whether we’re focusing on the details that truly matter or getting lost in things that are purely aesthetic or superficial.  Because this energy can hold onto grievances, it's also a Full Moon ideal to work with forgiveness. As this year’s happens to be a lunar eclipse, the emotional revelations may feel even more profound. These eclipses don’t always bring external change the way solar eclipses can, but they do shift our inner perspective. With that shift often comes the need to extend forgiveness—whether toward someone else or toward ourselves.

There are eight major phases of the Moon, with each one carrying its own significance—both in magical practice and in psychological awareness. The two though with the most influence are without a doubt the New Moon and Full Moon. The New Moon bringing the moment to send our hopes, intentions, and desires out into the universe, trusting that something meaningful will return. The Full Moon, although often emotionally intense, offering illumination in the truest sense of the word by bringing clarity to what we're feeling.

Once you begin to understand how these lunar transits affect you throughout the year, the Moon becomes an invaluable tool. It helps you manifest what you want for yourself while also reminding you to extend grace to yourself in the process. Not everything blooms instantly—some results need time, patience, and space to unfold.

The Moon is not a mysterious, distant pebble in the sky meant to intimidate or unsettle us. It is a constant companion—even in our darkest moments, offering enough light to help us see the next step forward.
