🌙 The Witch Who Finally Wrote in Her Books

— A love letter to the magick of metaphysical annotation. —
There was a time when I believed writing in books was a kind of sacrilege. I treated every page like a relic — crisp, untouched, preserved as if my handwriting might somehow disturb the spirit of the text. I was the girl who kept her spines as clean as possible, her margins immaculate, her books as pristine as the day she got them. And because of that, I learned to rely on journals instead. Outlining became my ritual: page after page of summaries told through arrows and quotes. Earnest reflections all carefully kept separate from the book itself. It helped with recall, yes — but it also kept me at a distance. I was studying the text, not entering into relationship with it.

But something in me has been shifting. Maybe it’s the deepening of my spiritual practice. Maybe it’s the way my intuition has been sharpening or the ways in which I have been reclaiming parts of myself I once ignored. Whatever the catalyst, I’ve found myself drawn toward a new way of reading — one that feels less like analysis and more like spellwork. Annotating has become a doorway, a ritual, a conversation between me and the book. And honestly, it’s strengthening my witchy journey in ways I never expected.
When I annotate now, I’m not just underlining sentences. I’m mapping energy. I’m tracking archetypes and noticing where a passage feels like Saturn’s stern hand or where a character is dripping in Venusian longing. I’m marking the moments that feel like omens, the lines that echo dreams I've had, or the paragraphs that vibrate with the same frequency as a tarot pull from the other day. Suddenly, the book isn’t just a story anymore — it’s a living, breathing mirror of my inner world.
The metaphysical annotation system I’ve been using has become a kind of personal language. A ☾ in the margin tells me the Moon was speaking to me there — something emotional, intuitive, ancestral. A ♇ marks a moment of shadow work or transformation. A ✦ means destiny was whispering to the character and I picked up on it. These symbols turn the book into a cosmic map, a chart of my own evolution. Where I can account and record the energies that moved through me as I read. It’s wild how much more alive a text becomes when you let yourself interact with it this way.
Energetic Markings:
The below have helped me track how the text feels linguistically and emotionally.
- Underline (single): resonance
- Underline (double): revelation
- Wavy underline: emotional charge **(my fav to encounter)
- Star in margin: “Remember this for later”
- Triangle: transformational moment
- Circle: symbol or motif worth tracking
- Spiral: something I know I'll want to revisit when I reread this a couple years from now, to see if my take evolves
And the beautiful part is that annotating doesn’t feel like “defacing” anymore. It feels like devotion. It feels like weaving myself into the text, like honoring the parts that touch me, like leaving breadcrumbs for my future self. My margins have become a place where my intuition speaks freely — where I can say, “This is a Persephone moment,” or “This feels like a message from spirit,” or “Pay attention, something is shifting here.” It’s intimate. It’s magickal. It’s in an all new way, mine.
What surprises me most is how natural it feels now. I used to think writing in books was a violation. Now it feels like a spell. A collaboration with the original author. A way of grounding the wisdom instead of letting it float away. I'm remembering more too. My journals now serve a different purpose, if I want to expand on something the margins won't, but the book itself has become a companion in any ritual I devise — a vessel that holds not just the author’s words, but now my energy, my symbols, my mythic fingerprints.
Types of Notes You May Want To Take:
(Use short tags to guide your future self.)
- MYTH: archetypal parallel (Persephone, Odin, Inanna, etc.)
- ASTRO: astrological resonance (transit, house, planet)
- SELF: personal reflection
- SYNC: synchronicity or real‑life echo
- DREAM: dream connection
- RITUAL: something you want to embody or practice
- QUOTE: lines worth extracting later
- THREAD: recurring theme to track
This practice is still new to me, but it’s already becoming one of the most powerful tools in my spiritual life. Annotating has taught me to read with my whole self — my intuition, my body, while using my connection to symbolism, to my witchcraft. It’s teaching me to slow down, to listen, to notice the subtle threads of meaning that weave through every story and to add my voice to it.
Maybe that’s the real magick of it: the realization that the book isn’t the only thing speaking any longer. I am too. And the margins are where our voices meet.

🔮Ritual for Beginning a New Book
Especially if I feel called to a book strongly knowing it will unlock something in me, I now treat turning the first page with the significance it deserves. A way to open to the text like it's entering a sacred space.
1. Prepare Your Reading Space
Choose one or two:
- Light a candle (white for clarity, indigo for intuition, gold for wisdom).
- Place a crystal nearby (amethyst, labradorite, or clear quartz perhaps).
- Place the book on a cloth or surface you reserve for spiritual work.
Let your breath settle. Let your mind soften.
2. Set The Intention:
Whisper or write:
“May this book reveal what I am ready to understand.”
or
“I open myself to the wisdom between these pages.”
You can of course tailor this invocation to the book’s theme if you want.
3. Bless The Pages Within
Place your hand on the cover and imagine:
- A thin line of stardust tracing the spine
- The pages glowing faintly
- The story opening like a portal
Say (silently or aloud):
“Guide me. Teach me. Bring forth what needs revealing.”
4. Draw Your First Symbol
On the inside cover or first page, I like to draw one symbol from the annotation key that I suspect will represent my relationship with the book.
Examples:
- ✦ if I'm seeking destiny or direction
- ☾ if I'm doing emotional work
- ♃ if I want it to expand my mind
- ⚕ if I know I'm seeking healing in so way
This becomes the book’s “energetic signature.”
5. Pull a Card (Optional)
If you use tarot or oracle cards:
- Pull one card asking, “What energy will this book bring into my life?”
- Write the card name on the inside cover so you will remember and return the card to the deck. (If you have many decks, perhaps use it as a bookmark for the time being)
- Let it guide your reading.
6. Read the First Page Slowly
Not to analyze — but to feel.
Notice:
- What word or phrase seem to glow, pulling your attention most
- What emotion rises
- What archetype whispers right away
Mark your first annotation here. This can anchor your relationship with the text.
7.Dive in!
🔮 CHAPTER‑CLOSING RITUAL
Because I often pick up and put down a book spratically it feels nice to have a formal goodbye when I finish a passage. Like a gentle, mystical way to seal each chapter and integrate what I've learned to that point.
1. Close the book for a moment.
Let the chapter settle in your body — not just your mind.
Ask yourself silently:
“What shifted in me?”
2. Choose One Symbol
From your annotation key, pick the symbol that best captures the chapter’s energy.
Examples:
- ✦ if it felt like a destiny-thread
- ☾ if it stirred emotion
- ♄ if it revealed a lesson
- ✧ if it sparked intuition
Write it at the bottom of the last page of the chapter.
3. Capture One Line of Truth
Write a single sentence that answers:
“What is the medicine of this chapter?”
It can be symbolic, or emotional.
4. Offer a Closing Breath
Place your hand on the last page. Take one slow breath in and out.
Whisper (or think):
“I'll carry this with me.”
Then turn the page to the next chapter and place your bookmark if done for now.
My advice is that if you decide to begin annotating, start slowly. It can be a lot to remember but there is no right way to do it. It's a process that evolves with you. Like many things it's best to let your intuition guide your pen. Mark only what vibrates. Write only what feels alive. And remember it's likely only going to be you reading these so don't be afraid to be vulnerable with your notes. Let your margins become a place where your heart is safe and your magick gathers — a place where the book and your spirit meet in conversation.
